MID CITY NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL ART CONTEST

FRI, Nov 20, 2020 submissions open; SUN, Jan 31, 2021 11:59 PM submissions end

I was fortunate enough to get a glimpse of the Mid-City contest poster when I was driving home in Mid-City Los Angeles. I immediately knew I had to apply and create new surrealism art. The contest ran from November 20th, 2020 – January 31st, 2021. I started thinking about the theme which is: “Share your vision of the world or as you imagine it. Artwork that reflects the world and how you see it.”

I began with “THE ROOTS” (see image below), and this painting resembles the culture of Los Angeles. It’s about the love and culture of living in LA while simultaneously dealing with reality as a woman raising a child and another newborn soon to come without a husband to support in a neighborhood full of gangs, and the resentment of wishing she should have taken a morning-after pill. There is also the affects of losing your home because of LA fires, but the flame of love is still burning because there is nowhere else to live but LOS ANGELES.

The second painting I began working on was “FAITHFULLY UNITED” (see image below). Wow, this painting made me realize that we are all truly fighting this war against COVID-19 worldwide. The faith and patience we have for one another during this tough time has shown that we are together to win this fight with ONE LOVE. From the White race to the Black race, we all have to respect one another by removing race, gender, or age to win the battle of survival that we are all in the fight against. COVID-19 is taking lives everyday – to stop the spread, we need to mask up and keep a safe 6-feet distance from one another as we carefully disinfect and wash our hands before eating. We will win with patience and love.

The final painting in this series is called “RISE OF THE SUN” (see image below). This painting focuses on the different cultures of the world and how difficult it is now that we are not able to see that diversity everyday because of COVID-19 – the beauty of attending cultural events and seeing amazing fabrics, hearing beautiful music, enjoying cultural food, and taking in the atmosphere of wholesome cultural experiences. Soon, we will rise like the Sun.
